Building the Secret Tree Watering Gift

Materials Needed:
Many of the parts I used were items I already had on hand, and you might have them too. If not, I’ve included links to the key components below. Members can connect with us directly through our exclusive Discord community for build support and questions—we’re here to help!
- 1 banker’s box (or a cardboard box of similar size)
- 1 plastic container (that fits inside the banker’s box)
- 1/2-inch PVC thread fitting
- 1/2-inch O-rings (x2)
- 1/2-inch faucet washers
- Clear tubing (10 feet, cut as needed)
- 1/2-inch PVC pipe (for the water level meter)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Durable wrapping paper
- Sponges (x2)
- Straw (for water level float)
- Graduated drill bits (available at Harbor Freight)
- Tape (packing tape)
- Bow (optional for decoration)
Build Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Plastic Container
- Drill a hole in the bottom of the plastic container to fit the ½ inch PVC thread.
- Place an O-ring on both sides of the hole and secure it with a faucet washer to prevent leaks.
- Test the container by filling it with water and ensuring no leaks occur.
Step 2: Assemble the Tubing System
- Cut the clear tubing to size (around 5 feet, depending on your setup).
- Connect the tubing to the PVC fitting on the container.
- Test the tubing by running water through it to ensure proper flow.
- Shorten the tubing if necessary to improve water flow and remove air gaps.
Step 3: Build the Water Level Meter
- Cut PVC pipe into an upside-down T shape.
- Drill small holes in the bottom of the pipe to allow water to flow into the vertical section.
- Seal one end of a straw with hot glue to make it airtight so it floats.
- Place the straw inside the PVC pipe to serve as a water level indicator.
Step 4: Prepare the Box
- Cut the edges of the banker’s box if necessary to fit the plastic container snugly.
- Place sponges between the cardboard box and the bottom of the plastic container to prevent pinching of the tubing.
- Tape the edges of the box to keep water from leaking between the cardboard and container.
- Drill a small hole in one side of the box for the tube to come out of.
Step 5: Wrapping the Gift
- Use durable, water-resistant wrapping paper to wrap the box, ensuring a tight and clean finish.
- Cut holes in the plastic lid and cardboard lid to allow the water level meter to pass through.
- Secure the wrapping paper with tape to maintain its durability.
Step 6: Final Assembly
- Place the wrapped gift under the tree, ensuring the tubing runs discreetly into the tree stand.
- Siphon water through the tubing if necessary to remove air gaps and start the flow.
- Ensure the water level in the gift does not exceed the water level in the tree stand to prevent spills.
- Add a bow or other decorations for a festive touch.
Step 7: Maintenance
- Monitor the water level using the straw in the water level meter—refill as needed.
- Enjoy a well-hydrated Christmas tree without the daily hassle!

Don't forget the lid!

Water Level Meter
We got our straw from starbucks, and used 1/2" PVC pipe with a 1/2" tee fitting.
1/2" PVC pipe and Tee fitting are available at any hardware store, including Lowes and Home Depot.

The Hot Glue Gun that I use
This is the hot glue gun that I use. I've had it for 2 years, and it works very well. Plus it is battery powered, so always convenient. I've tried other brands of battery powered versions, worx is the best. Not a sponsor... yet.

Tape, Bow, Packaging
We got our wrapping paper from Hobby Lobby. I used packing tape to waterproof the edges of the plastic bin against the cardboard, and also used the packing tape to put the wrapping paper on.

Graduated Step Drill Bit
Only buy these from Harbor Freight or perhaps Amazon.
They are $20 for a two pack at Harbor Freight. But for some reason Lowes/ Home Depot tries to sell these for more than $50 for one.
